Binoculars with night vision

How does night vision binoculars work?

Usually, people use night vision devices for hunting, terrain orientation, for watching night animals and so one. In other words, they use it in outdoor. There must be the moonlight or light of stars. The principle of night vision devices work is the increase of rushlight, which is not enough for our eyes. Any night vision binocular does not work in absolute darkness without special assistance. If you stay in a closed room without windows or any least sources of light, your night vision device won’t help you if only it uses infrared light.

Depending on using infrared light or not night vision binoculars can be divided into two types: Active and Passive.

Night vision binocular consists of three parts: Optical, electronic and another one Optical.

  • The optical part represents an objective lens, which gathers elements of light, photons, and focuses them on the main part of a device – on an electron-optical converter. A special form and optical cover of lenses help to minimize optical distortions. Regular glasses have covering like this.
  • A basic element of the device is an electron-optical converter, calling “photomultiplier tube” (PMT). Its main function is to convert photons into electrons, intensify them and convey on a fluorescent screen. In our days, there are several generations of the photomultiplier tubes: from 1st to 4th, and also Filmless, WPT, CORE, and Digital.
  • And, finally, an ocular increases the small image and you can see it.

What about night vision binoculars with an infrared illuminator? These devices are supplied with a flashlight that emits radiation in an infrared spectrum. Human eyes cannot see it.
